  • Did you know that 50% of Americans over the age of 50 have H pylori, a chronic infestation of the lining of the stomach that can cause ulcers and cancer

  • the risk of colon cancer for the average American is 1:20 - this is nearly 6% of the population [your risk may be higher if you have relatives with colon cancer or if you have certain diseases]

  • the majority of cases of adult-onset asthma is caused by acid reflux disease [GERD]

  • Hepatitis C is a treatable and very curable disease with the new medications available

  • it usually takes years from the onset of symptoms to the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohns or ulcerative colitis

  • chronic heartburn over the course of years may lead to esophageal strictures or even cancer

  • the normal range of bowel movements is twice a day to once a week [as long as you are not uncomfortable] - more or less than this is considered abnormal

  • Hepatitis C is usually transmitted by blood-to-blood contact, which can include tatoos, use of nail-clippers in beauty salons, and piercings - most people with Hepatitis C do not know they have the disease

  • blood in the stool is never normal and you cannot assume it is just from hemorrhoids

  • everyone at the age of 50 needs to undergo colon cancer screening - or sooner in certain circumstances
